Ro Bumbeh Village, Sierra Leone: Mosque Appeal
In January 2024, a member of SLIA came across a viral appeal video on social media, requesting humanitarian help for the people of Ro Bumbeh Village, in Sierra Leone. The mosque is the focal point the community and was a dilapidated mud brick structure. The roof had collapsed making the building unusable during the rainy season.
Phase 1 : The Appeal
The members of SLIA decided to act to support this community to assist with finance, project management, supply of materials and workers as it was clear that this would be a worthwhile project for a deserving community.
SLIA held a consultation with all members and a project committee was established to coordinate the delivery of the project. Committee gets status update directly from the community, walking in collaboration and also with other donors interested in the project. The project includes the development of the main building, a water well to provide fresh water for drinking and Wudu, sanitary facilities, electricity and a community centre.
The project Committee provides regular updates and accountability to ensure that the funds donated are used solely for the project. The Project Managers are Dr ST Jalloh and Haja Isatu Sesay Conteh, both of whom have volunteered their time and expertise free of charge. They manage the budget, provide building works oversight, resource provision supply of materials and overall governance.
Phase 2 : Work Begins
In February 2024, building works started with demolishing of the mud structure and the building of a modern concrete building designed to modern architectural and safety standards. The foundation and walls have been completed. Roofing commenced in Mid-March and a well is being dug to provide clean water for drinking and Wudu. The pace of work has been phenomenal and the effective leadership provided by SLIA and the work carried out by the community.
Phase 3 : The Future
From March 2024 onwards, the plan is to complete the roof prior to the start of the rainy season. There are other activities required to complete mosque, provide sanitary facilities and build the community centre for use of all the villagers.
